Review: Hallmark's "His & Hers" Falls Short of Fans' Expectations

Lacey Chabert and Brennan Elliott are a beloved Hallmark couple, and it was with eager anticipation and high expectations that fans tuned in September 7 to watch them in the first Fall into Love movie of 2024--His & Hers.

Although many fans were charmed and entertained by Chabert's and Elliott's tenth Hallmark project together, a surprising number of viewers expressed disinterest and disappointment in the new flick, though they were quick to defend their favorite celebs' immense talent and blame Hallmark Channel for a mediocre script.

Our review of His & Hers will break down the highs and lows of the movie.

His & Hers Plot Recap

If you haven't seen His & Hers, the plot is unique (at least for a romcom).

Mark (Elliott) and Dana (Chabert) are celebrating their seventh wedding anniversary, and they seem like the perfect married couple--at least until they find themselves on opposite sides of a highly public divorce case involving a warring reality show couple.

Here's a look at the trailer:

What His & Hers Gets Right

Elliott's and Chabert's chemistry is tangible. After working together in so many movies, the two easily fall into step with one another, and it's clear they find it a joy to work together.

Chabert shared with Southern Living, "There is a shorthand and that’s the comfort of working with someone that you know so well and that you’re friends with in real life. There’s that trust and it really makes my job so much easier.”

His & Hers has comedic moments. When her client, Tabby, is failing miserably on a radio interview, Dana calls into the station with a fake accent to voice support, only to be caught in the act by her husband. Interestingly, Chabert has done numerous voice over roles through the years--Hallmark should explore her untapped talent more in future films!

When Dana and Mark accidentally read each other's background checks, they learn new, shocking details about one another that leads to a humorous dialogue.

Marks gifts Dana with wool socks to keep her feet from freezing him. Our husbands can relate--right, ladies?

The movie is also heartwarming. Even though Mark needs to win the case to make partner at his firm, he remains loyal, protective, and supportive of his wife.

The best part of the movie is catching the hidden gems included in the story that refer to prior movies the two have filmed together. In Dana's background check, it shows she had been previously married to WILL KEMP. Mark assures Dana with the words, "You have ALL OF MY HEART." When Mark verbalizes his desire to give Dana a garden, dogs, and GOATS, she responds with, "You know I love baby goats." Dana keeps a CROSSWORD PUZZLE on her desk, and one of the answers to her current crossword is LOGAN. Anticipating these golden nuggets is delightful!

The movie also has two twists at the end that are unexpected.

Chabert's fashion style is stellar in the movie, and It's a Wonderful Lifestyle has tracked down where you can find some of her outfits here.

How His & Hers Falls Short

Disenchanted fans call the movie "terrible," "boring," and "not one of Lacey's and Brennan's best."

Maybe the most off-putting aspect of the movie is the divorcing reality star couple. For those who don't enjoy reality TV, the stereotypical characters drip with enough narcissism to sour the stomach.

Some don't relish the seven-day-long anniversary celebration. Watching Dana and Mark at the same restaurant multiple times while exchanging daily gifts feels herniated and tedious to some viewers.

While the two twists at the end are unforeseen, the continuity feels "off," like Hallmark is trying to tack on too many things at once. The movie feels like it should have concluded sooner. Maybe this is a result of poor editing.

RomCom Review Weighs in on Hallmark's His & Hers

The All of My Heart trilogy sets the bar so high that His & Hers simply can't measure up. However, the movie is still fun and enjoyable in its own right.

I appreciate that Hallmark casts Elliott and Chabert as a married couple instead of forcing them to act like they are discovering love for the first time when they are 49 and nearly 42-years-old, respectively.

Lawyers get a bad rap, and the movie gives a playful jab at the vocation. Both Dana's and Mark's bosses agree to go along with a scheme that lacks integrity, like stereotypical lawyers would do, and it guides the trajectory of the entire plot.

The annual marriage inventory is a fun idea. Dana and Mark share their list of grievances and gratitudes regarding their relationship, and it's a unique maintenance idea for couples.

I share a distaste for reality show storylines, as many viewers mentioned, but overall, the movie is fun to watch once.

I loved the movie, not Adam's Rib but a fun movie and I liked the presents, noting the anniversary, not enough romance in daily life, this was fun
